Russian civilians dig anti-tank ditches and warm themselves from the frigid cold with a bonfire anticipating a full-scale German invasion of the Soviet capital during the Battle of Moscow. The battle took place from 2 October 1941 until 7 January 1942. The Soviet defensive effort frustrated the German’s attack on Mocow and Soviet strategic counter-offensive and smaller-scale offensive operations were executed and pushed the German armies back to the positions around the cities of Oryol, Vyazma and Vitebsk, nearly surrounding three German armies in the process.
