Portrait of a young Wehrmacht Unteroffizier, who was awarded both the Close Combat Clasp (German: Nahkampfspange) and the Eastern Front Medal, with his MP-40 machine gun during the Battle of the Korsun-Cherkassy Pocket of the Dnieper-Carpathian Offensive. The Dnieper-Carpathian Offensive, fought from 24 December 1943 until 14 April 1944, was a successful strategic offensive executed by the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Ukrainian Fronts, along with the 1st Belorussian Front, against the German Army Group South, intended to retake all of the Ukrainian and Moldovan territories occupied by Axis forces. By early 1944, the Germans could not sustain their siege on the U.S.S.R. any longer, and were forced into an all-out retreat. Near Lysianka, Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine, Soviet Union. January 1944.
